What does X1 Labs do?expand_more

X1 Labs is a software development and AI research partnership run by Katie Page and Kristina Watson. We build bespoke digital products for UK businesses, including websites, internal tooling, automation and AI-integrated systems, alongside original AI research published under the X1 Labs name.

Are you still making games?expand_more

Video game programming remains one of our services, but it's no longer our main focus. Our priority is custom software, websites and AI-integrated systems for small and micro businesses, alongside our research work. You can see our games work in the Games portfolio.

Where are you based, and do you work with clients elsewhere?expand_more

We're based in Norfolk, UK, but work with clients across the UK remotely as standard.

Why is your address not in Norfolk?expand_more

Our registered business address is in a different county to our operational location due to being a small business using a virtual office for correspondence. Despite this, we live in Norwich.

Do you use Generative AI in your work?expand_more

We believe in the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence in our work, and use it to assist with tasks such as code generation and research. We do not use AI to generate prose or imagery outside of prototyping, and hire graphics designers where required. All AI generated code is originally written by our team and then reviewed by AI for efficiency and correctness. We do not use AI to generate code without human oversight.

What languages do you speak?expand_more

We primarily speak English, but can also accommodate Chinese (Traditional) and Dutch (in writing).

Can I have your services for free?expand_more

We are a small business and cannot provide our services for free. However, we do offer reduced rates for charities and non-profits, and can discuss arrangements on a case-by-case basis.

How much do your services cost?expand_more

Our pricing is bespoke and depends on the scope of the project. We provide quotes after discussing your requirements. Please get in touch to discuss your project and receive a quote. You can expect a floor cost of £700 for a small website, or £1,200 for a software project.

What payment methods do you accept?expand_more

We accept bank transfer, PayPal, SumUp, Cash and Cheque.

When do I pay?expand_more

We usually ask for a 50% deposit upfront, with the remainder due on completion of the project. For larger projects, we may agree on a payment schedule.

Do you offer maintenance and support?expand_more

Yes, we offer ongoing maintenance and support for our software and websites. This can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, depending on the project and your needs. By default, we offer 1-year warranty on all our work, with the option to continue using our maintenance on a pay-as-you-go basis after that.

What are your research ethics?expand_more

We follow the principles of responsible AI research, including transparency, accountability, and fairness. We also adhere to ethical guidelines for data collection and usage, and ensure that our research does not harm individuals or communities.

Do you accept cold outreach?expand_more

We do not answer cold calls by mobile, due to the high volume of spam calls we receive. Please email us instead, and we will respond as soon as possible. If you are trying to sell a product or service to X1 Labs as an organization, please put the word "Barnetby" at the end of your email subject line, so we know you have read this FAQ and are not a spammer. We will not respond to cold emails without this word in the subject line.

Yes, we are proud to be an inclusive and welcoming workplace for people of all backgrounds and identities. Both Katie and Kristina are LGBTQ+ and frequently advocate for the advancement of queer rights.
